Great Photography Portraits   by Skilly Easl

The stills captured by means of photography of a person, or a small group of persons, with maximum focus on the face of a person are photography portraits. It is also known as portraiture. The object of portrait photography is to capture the likeness and personality of a particular subject or subjects. When there is more than one person, it is likely to be a family portrait or couple portrait. Although a portrait may include up to a person’s bust or even the entire torso or in some cases the entire body, the focus remains the face. The background, if not monochromatic, is blurred out and maximum sharpness is rendered to the projecting features of the subject’s face. This is achieved by certain Photography Tricks or touching techniques.

Photography portraits are usually more than just a snapshot of a human face. It is a very composed picture, usually perfectly erect, in a still position. Also in a portrait, the subject’s or the subjects’ eyes are directly looking at the camera. The subjects, as against common photography models are non-professional models. This makes Portrait Photography a bit challenging. More than being a highly creative photographer, one needs to master the technical skills while using a camera to capture portraits.

The commercial application of portraiture may be restricted to illustrations of annual reports of companies, studio public displays, in magazines and other media that feature photography portraits, fine art portraiture public displays, and in biographies and autobiographies of known persons. Earlier on, when cameras were not so highly popular in the world, portrait painting was one of the methods of capturing stills of subjects but it was tedious, not only for the painter, but for the subjects as well. In mid-19th century, there was the birth of a lot of photography studios and portraiture became very popular because for one, it was much simpler and secondly, it was more accurate. But today, with the coming in of powerful computers, it is very easy also to manipulate high resolution photographs to make them look even better than they might actually be.

Lighting is one of the most important components of photography portraits other than the background. It is very important to have uniform distribution of lights. There are lighting kits available, which are also portable, which have stands and lights and diffusion equipment like umbrellas. If for some reason, one finds that they cannot arrange for the equipment, there are other simpler techniques such as exposing one side of the face to a white source of light, say a window, and place a reflecting white surface on the other. However, in professional photography, a three-point lighting system is used.

There many styles of photography portraits, in which different parts of the subject’s body or face are focused at. For example, the eyes, nose and the mouth has maximum focus with softer focus on the neck perhaps, or sometimes, the focus is sharpened at the hands and fingers, or any required part of the body.
